Modica Cottoia broad beans were widely used in the local cuisine. They were easy to cook, earning in the name “cottoia”, and farm laborers were given a daily ration of a “mezzo coppo”, corresponding to 500 grams of beans, cooked on their own or with vegetables. Full of proteins and low cost, they were called “the meat of the poor”.
